Copenhague, 18 de julio de 2023. La Embajada de Colombia en Dinamarca tiene el honor de transmitir el comunicado de S.E. el Ministro de Relaciones Exteriores de Colombia, Álvaro Leyva, con respecto a la contundente victoria judicial alcanzada por nuestro país en la Corte Internacional de Justicia de La Haya, el 13 de julio de 2023.

Este fallo pone fin -de manera definitiva- a los procedimientos incoados por Nicaragua ante ese alto tribunal y les da mayor seguridad jurídica a los pobladores del Archipiélago de San Andrés y Providencia, así como de toda la cuenca del mar Caribe. 

La CIJ aceptó todos los argumentos de Colombia, lo que constituye un logro jurídico incuestionable. Como lo afirma el señor Ministro Álvaro Leyva:

“Las victorias de esta categoría son poco frecuentes en los tribunales internacionales. Con certeza se puede afirmar que es una decisión que será trascendental para el devenir del derecho del mar, del derecho internacional general. Servirá de base para evitar el surgimiento de innumerables e infructuosas controversias en todas las regiones del planeta.”

STATEMENT ON THE RECENT VICTORY OF COLOMBIA AGAINST NICARAGUA AT THE INTERNATIONAL COURT OF JUSTICE (ICJ)

Copenhagen, July 18, 2023. The Embassy of Colombia in Denmark has the honor to transmit the statement of H.E. the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Colombia, Álvaro Leyva, regarding the resounding judicial victory achieved by our country at the International Court of Justice in The Hague, on July 13, 2023.

This ruling puts an end - definitively - to the proceedings initiated by Nicaragua before that high court and gives greater legal security to the inhabitants of the Archipelago of San Andrés and Providencia, as well as the entire Caribbean Sea basin.

The ICJ accepted all of Colombia's arguments, which is an unquestionable legal achievement. As stated by Minister Álvaro Leyva:

“Victories of this category are not very frequent in international tribunals. It can be said with certainty that it is a decision that will be transcendental for the future of the law of the sea, the general international law. It will serve as a basis to prevent the emergence of innumerable and fruitless controversies in all regions of the planet.”
